The Wee Hours, Revisited

*This is an old post I wrote a long time ago (When Kate and my mom were my only readers.) I thought it was an appropriate topic for today. Enjoy :)

I am not a morning person by any means. I am one of those "any excuse to stay in bed just a little longer" kind of people. Even though having children has forced me to wake up earlier then I would choose many times. But I found myself unable to stay in bed after Joe got up at 5am for work today. No kids were awake, not even the dogs. Just silence and me. So, I decided to sit on the back porch with a good book.

I am constantly amazed at how beautiful the early morning is, why don't I make an effort to get up early more often? (The bed is just TOO comfy, and I am just TOO grumpy first thing when I get up.) The sky was a beautiful sleepy blue with the sun just peaking over the trees, and then I saw the moon. It was so bright for the morning. I know, I know, the moon is often up still when the sun rises, but this was different. It seemed much brighter, as if to say "NO! I am not ready to just lay down quietly, I wanna be seen!"

I feel like that some days as a wife and mother. "NO! I want to be noticed for who I am, look at me, I am trying to get your attention!!" We as women sometimes lose our own individual voice and just become "mom." Not that there is anything wrong with that wonderful title, it is just important for us to not lose sight of who we are in the process.

Currently I have no clue who I am. I feel like a pre-teen trying to figure out where I fit in the world. I struggle with what I will do once my kids don't need me as much as they do now. The things I was once so passionate about now I find little interest in. My world truly revolves around my children (as it should) but, there is this little part of me that says "you can do so much more."

For now I will be like the bright early morning moon. Make my presence known "look at me! look at me!" and try finding myself through words in my blog, and then lay down during the day and let the sun (my children) shine all day long.

au revoir, adieu, ciao, till next time...

Locked Out... Again

This morning was quite entertaining around my house...

I locked myself out of the house. In my jammies, no bra, hair pulled up and not brushed yet. In the cold, no phone, and needed to pick the kids up from preschool within the hour. Get the picture? Yeah, it was fun! *grrrr*

Thanks goodness my neighbors mom happened to be home so I could call the hubby. I would have been wandering all over town half naked, in search of a phone. 3o minutes later my knight in shining armor came driving down the street to let me back in the house.

Sadly, this isn't the first time I have locked myself out of the house. I do it often. But, I have never been so vulnerable and in need of saving. I used to have 2 spare keys hidden just for this occasion but they got packed up this weekend.

Thank you sweet heart, what would I do without you?

(I'd be a naked street walker apparently!)

Water Fall On Me

What is it about hot showers that makes a long day just go down the drain and disappear? There is countless evidence of the healing power of water (please, don't make me look it up... I'm tired! Go ahead, google it, i swear there's something there.) But I am still amazed what a little water can do.

I remember water being such a reason for joy as a kid, mention of the beach, sprinkler, or pool and I was there!

As a pregnant woman, water aerobics made even my sorest muscles feel better.

Now as a mom of 2 V E R Y active children I am lucky to get 5 minutes of freedom, let alone a shower!

So tonight I put the kids to bed early after my hubby left for his weekly bowling league and I took a LONG hot shower. Yup, you heard me, uninterrupted bathing! No fingers under the door, no "mommy" being yelled from another room, nothing. Just me, myself and I. (Oh and my razor, poor razor thinks I don't love him anymore because who has time to shave their legs???)

I just stood there, paralyzed, enjoying silence and hot water. I honestly can't remember the last time I was able to wash my hair, shave my legs, and use my scented body wash all in one shower! Now I feel great! I am ready to tackle tomorrow.

Am I the only one who is mesmerized by the healing power of water? OK, now I have spent an entire blog discussing my shower. GOD i need a girls night out!!

Women in the White House

OK People, I want to know what you think about this Presidential race...

Not so much your political views, but more your view on women emerging more and more towards that Oval office. Many think that women are too emotional, too fragile, too "girly" to run this country, to even be a VP. What do you have to say about this?

I, for one, am so excited to be apart of this time in our nations history. I am positive I will see the first female President before God calls me home. It may not be this election, but I am positive it will happen in my lifetime.

"Throughout most of history women generally have had fewer legal rights and career opportunities than men. Wifehood and motherhood were regarded as women's most significant professions. In the 20th century, however, women in most nations won the right to vote and increased their educational and job opportunities. Perhaps most important, they fought for and to a large degree accomplished a reevaluation of traditional views of their role in society."
-Excert from Women's History In America

Women have come so far in such a short time, take a look:

1850: The first National Women's Rights Convention takes place in Worceser, Mass., attracting more than 1,000 participants. National conventions are held yearly (except for 1857) through 1860.

May 1869: Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton form the National Woman Suffrage Association. The primary goal of the organization is to achieve voting rights for women by means of a Congressional amendment to the Constitution.

Aug. 26, 1920: The 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote, is signed into law by Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby.

1960: The Food and Drug Administration approves birth control pills.

1961: President John Kennedy establishes the President's Commission on the Status of Women and appoints Eleanor Roosevelt as chairwoman. The report issued by the Commission in 1963 documents substantial discrimination against women in the workplace and makes specific recommendations for improvement, including fair hiring practices, paid maternity leave, and affordable child care.

June 19, 1963: Congress passes the Equal Pay Act, making it illegal for employers to pay a woman less than what a man would receive for the same job.

1969: California becomes the first state to adopt a "no fault" divorce law, which allows couples to divorce by mutual consent. By 1985 every state has adopted a similar law. Laws are also passed regarding the equal division of common property.

1973: As a result of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court establishes a woman's right to safe and legal abortion, overriding the anti-abortion laws of many states.

1978: The Pregnancy Discrimination Act bans employment discrimination against pregnant women. Under the Act, a woman cannot be fired or denied a job or a promotion because she is or may become pregnant, nor can she be forced to take a pregnancy leave if she is willing and able to work.

1986: Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson, the Supreme Court finds that sexual harassment is a form of illegal job discrimination.

1994: The Violence Against Women Act tightens federal penalties for sex offenders, funds services for victims of rape and domestic violence, and provides for special training of police officers.

I could add many more things, but I wanted to highlight major milestones for women. Look at all women have done in such a short time! Next we conquer the White House :) I hope you have learned something, and you see what an amazing creature God created when he made woman.

On a lighter note about all this "Women climbing the ladder of life" stuff, I present to you a clip from a recent episode of Saturday Night Live that had me rolling! Enjoy.
