Nerves In A Dentist Chair

Today Zane had a big dentist appointment. He had to get a cavity removed and a crown put on. When I found out he would have to have this done I felt like such a failure, after all, it is my job at this time in their life to take care of their oral health. I hoped the dentist realized I do brush my kids teeth everyday. I spared him the details and said he would be getting that one yucky tooth super cleaned.

As we stepped into the office I was so nervous. Questions swirled in my head. How would he do? Would he be in pain? Would this traumatize him for life about going to the dentist? Would he be mad at me for lying if it did hurt?

Then it started, the drill made noise, the Novocaine was administered...
Zane did AWESOME! He didn't even flinch, not a complaint, nothing. He even thanked each of the tools for doing a good job. Wow, i was shocked. What a big boy he is becoming.

After it was all over he asked for a strawberry milkshake. You betcha buddy, anything you want!

The men go for a haircut

This afternoon the men in the family needed to get their hair trimmed. So off they went to Florence because nothing in Hartsville is open on a Sunday. Audrey and I watched "Charlottes Web" and went for a dip in the pool. After awhile I noticed they had been gone for a long time! Where could those boys be?

The answer?
Toys R Us

Oh no, Joe and Zane in Toys R Us usually means $$$$$. Luckily this trip to get a haircut didn't cost too much.

So here are the kids newest things from Daddy:

Audrey dressed as Snow White, she LOVES how the dress makes her look when she spins around in circles.

Zane's new Wall-E robot. It dances, zooms around real fast ad talks in "Robot talk"

Two happy kids, who get WAY too much stuff, enjoying Daddy being home from work for once.

(Notice all the Disney placement in this post? I wonder if they'll send us free tickets to Disney World! Probably not, but just in case someone from Disney reads this we would be glad to except such a generous offer.)

What a cool deal: go for a trim and come home with toys. Goodness, I feel like I might need a haircut. I wonder what I could get out of this deal? I could go for some new sun dresses, or maybe a cell phone that works! Hope you all are enjoying your weekend.

Independence Day? Mommy What's that?

Here is how I explained the 4th of July to my children:

Most people in the United States celebrate the 4th of July, but do you know exactly why the holiday is so important to our country? Imagine how you would feel if someone older than you (maybe an older sister or brother) kept telling you what to do all of the time and kept taking more and more of your allowance. That is how the colonists felt in the years leading up to 1776. Great Britain kept trying to make the colonists follow more rules and pay higher taxes. People started getting mad and began making plans to be able to make their own rules. They no longer wanted Great Britain to be able to tell them what to do, so they decided to tell Great Britain that they were becoming an independent country. (To be independent means to take care of yourself, making your own rules and providing for your own needs.)

The Congress met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and they appointed a committee (a group of people working together to do a specific job) to write a formal document that would tell Great Britain that the Americans had decided to govern themselves. The committee asked Thomas Jefferson to write a draft (first try) of the document, so he worked for days, in absolute secret, until he had written a document that he thought said everything important that the committee had discussed. On June 28, 1776, the committee met to read Jefferson's copy (he put his best ideas together and wrote them neatly.) They revised the document and declared their independence on July 2, 1776. They officially adopted it (made it theirs) on July 4, 1776. That is why we call it "Independence Day." Congress ordered that all members must sign the Declaration of Independence and they all began signing the "official" copy on August 2, 1776. In January of the next year, Congress sent signed copies to all of the states.

The Declaration of Independence is more than just a piece of paper. It is a symbol of our country's independence and commitment to certain ideas. The signers of the Declaration of Independence wanted the citizens of the United States to have a document that spelled out what was important to our leaders and citizens. They wanted us to be able to look at the Declaration of Independence and immediately think of the goals we should always be working for, and about the people who have fought so hard to make these ideas possible. The people who signed the Declaration risked being hanged for treason by the leaders in Great Britain. They had to be very brave to sign something that would be considered a crime! So every time we look at the Declaration of Independence, we should think about all of the effort and ideas that went into the document, and about the courage it took for these people to stand up for what they knew was right -- independence!

Have a great day everyone! We'll be spending today as a family. Cooking on the grill, eating watermelon, and watching fireworks. Happy 4th of July from me to all of you.

Dreaming

"A dream is a wish your heart makes, when you're fast asleep in dreams you. In dreams you will lose your heartaches; whatever you wish for you keep.Have faith in your dreams and someday your rainbow will come smiling thru, no matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep on believing the dream that you wish will come true." -Cinderella

OK, I am so excited!!! And i really shouldn't be, but I am!!! You know the saying "Don't count your chickens before they hatch"? As of late I have lived by that. But today I am throwing it all out the window.

Joe and I have kept our ears to the ground for job openings out west. We know that someday we would like to move that way since I am from California and I miss everyone SO much. Plus you can't beat the education out there for the kids. Well a few jobs have looked promising and we've applied to see what might come of it, not really thinking seriously. Then today a job opened up in San Luis Obispo, CA. The most beautiful wonderful place ever! I remember going on vacations there as a kid, cute college surf town right on the coast. For those of you who don't know about this gem here is a peak:

How could I not be excited? Look at this place! To be only a few hours drive from my grandma, to be able to go to family weddings, birthdays, and other events would be so awsome. What I wouldn't give for my kids to actually know their cousins. Alright Liz, calm down... Slow the wheels from turning so fast.

Yeah, I know "Don't count the chickens"...blah blah blah. I am trying, i swear! It's a weird prayer request, but could you please pray for a job out there? Thanks for reading about my silly optimistic dreams.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Remember this book from when you were a kid? This is how my day has felt...
(excerpt from book)
"I went to sleep with gum in my mouth and now there’s gum in my hair and when I got out of bed this morning I tripped on the skateboard . . . and I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day."

From there, Alexander’s day just keeps getting worse as he goes to school, finds himself at the dentist’s office, and has to go shopping for clothes with his mother. He has a miserable day. Even the family cat seems to be against him.

Nothing overly bad has happened today, I am just grumpy. Not quite sure why though. Maybe because Joe is still on night shift and being a "single parent" can take its toll, or I am just having one of those days. Any how, I understand Alexander today. Maybe if I were 5 years old it would be OK to be crabby, but as a mom you aren't given a get out of jail free card. We have to suck it up, put on a smile and pretend to be in a good mood so the kids don't think mom is a grouch.

So on this day I have declared secretly to my internet audience that I am having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Any advice out there on how turn my day around? Maybe a nice yummy coffee from Starbucks, mmm mmm, that might just do it!

Tomorrow I will be all sunshine and roses, I promise.
